LYRICAL

Lyrical is a creative combination of Ballet and Jazz. It’s an expressive style which allows the dancer to tell the story of the song. The style concentrates on the expression of the dancers various emotions such as anger, happiness, sadness, joy and so on. Lyrical is an evolving style and draws the attention of an audience because they can really connect with the story. When learning a lyrical dance, it is important and helpful to have a solid background in at least ballet, if not also jazz or other styles of modern dance.

STREET

Street dance is a style that evolved outside of a dance studio in America in 60’s/70’s where young African, Carribean and Latino communities would use outside spaces such as car parks to dance. They were social dances, passed around through word of mouth, through battles, cyphers, on the streets.  Street dance is an umbrella term for a large number of social dance styles including Hip Hop, house, popping, locking and much more. What are social dance styles? These are styles, with many accompanying steps, created from a culture, a way of life by social interaction between people.

Breaking & Popping

Breaking, also called breakdancing or b-boying/b-girling, is an athletic style of street dance originating from the African American community in the United States. While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, breakdancing mainly consists of four kinds of movement: toprockdownrockpower moves and freezes. Breakdancing is typically set to songs containing drum breaks, especially in hip-hopfunksoul music and breakbeat music, although modern trends allow for much wider varieties of music along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns.

Popping

Popping is a dance style that originated in the U.S. in the 60-70s, and is characterised by the sudden contracting and relaxing of a dancer’s muscles to the rhythm of the beat.

The dance styles include the robot, waving and tutting. However, popping is distinct from breaking and locking, with which it is often confused. A popping dancer is commonly referred to as a popper.

TAP

Tap is a really fun style that gives the dancer excellent training for their mind and feet. rhythmical tapping sound is attained by the dancer from the small metal plates on the dancer’s shoes. It is in his way that the dancer also becomes a percussive musician because it can be danced to music or without music. Tap dance can be danced as a solo or as a group. Groups have to work diligently together to match their steps and sounds with one another in performance. Like jazz, tap is a true American art form, born in the African-American community from a melting pot of African and European influences. Stemming from factors such as immigration and slavery in the early 19th century. It was a used as a way of communication. Mixed together with Irish step dancing or clogging and it is what we now know as tap. Our tap classes are fun, informative and magical.

BALLET

Ballet is one of the most beautiful forms of dance discipline originating from Italy and eventually moving to France. It is the core of most dance styles and goes hand in hand with other styles such as jazz and lyrical. Dancers learn precise moves and terminology that give them excellent control and strong bodies. On the surface ballet is elegant and beautiful to watch but underneath the dancer requires strength and concentration to maintain the style. Our classes at CAPA are currently at beginner level but aiming to go in to examination standard once the dancer is ready.
